Title:
Mesabi Range Outlines of Underground Caved Areas
Abstract:
The Mesabi Range Outlines of Underground Caved Areas data layer contains information regarding documented outlines of underground caved areas designated on mine maps within the Mesabi Range. These outlines were open-ended and could not be included in the polygon coverage Mesabi Range Underground Mine Workings (mesabi_underground_workingspy.shp).
Purpose:
This line feature layer was created to document outlines of underground caved areas that could not be included in the Mesabi Range Underground Mine Workings coverage (mesabi_underground_workingspy.shp) because the features could not be enclosed into polygons.

2008-2010: Digitization of the Eastern Mesabi Range underground mine features.

All features were digitized from historical mine maps dated 1903 to 1961.

Section 2: Data Quality
Attribute Accuracy:
All available historical documentation.
Logical Consistency:
Completeness:
Includes all found documented underground caved area outlines east of the Itasca/St. Louis county line on the Mesabi Range that could not be enclosed into polygons. This does not preclude the existence of additional or more recent mine maps that may indicate the presence of more extensive mine workings.
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
1:24,000
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Elevations in data set were taken from the original mine maps.
Lineage:
Underground mining areas were compiled from a number of sources. Areas with documented underground mine workings were digitized on screen using a compilation of a variety of historical maps dated from 1903 to 1961, cross sections, images and tabular documentation. Other references included USX plate images of the Mesabi Range, GNIOP Mesabi Range Maps, and an assortment of historical mining maps (1200 scale to 24000) stored at various agencies and companies including: Iron Range Research Center (IRRC), MN DNR Lands and Minerals Office, MN Department of Revenue, RGGS, Meriden Engineering, Great Northern Iron Ore Properties (GNIOP), Eveleth Fee, ArcelorMittal Minorca Mine, Cliffs Natural Resources, Hibbing Taconite, USS Mintac and USS Keetac. Arcs and polygons were digitized in ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 (central Mesabi) and ESRI ArcGIS 9.3 (eastern, western Mesabi) from a geo-referenced image of a compilation of the above documentation. Compiled information was geo-referenced to survey PLS corners where available with at least 4 control points digitized at a minimum of 1:2000. Where survey control points were not available, scans were geo-referenced to other scans that were larger in scale and geo-referenced to survey points. Undocumented underground features were not mapped and are not included in this dataset.
